Robert Hunter, who wrote this song, revealed In 1978 that "Scarlet Begonias" was originally much longer and had a title "Bristol Girls". He wrote it about his girlfriend Maureen.

"Scarlet Begonias" was premiered live at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, the USA, on the 23rd of March 1974.

The line "Everybody's playing in the Heart of Gold Band" gave the name to the band "Heart of Gold Band", formed by Keith and Donna Godchaux after they had left Grateful Dead in 1979.
